The Greater Manchester Police are continually striving to combat, prevent and reduce crime and harm in Greater Manchester.
Their promise to the public is:
"GMP will continually strive to fight, prevent and reduce crime and harm and keep people safe so that Greater Manchester can be a safer and welcoming place in which to live, work, learn and visit."
"These promises describe what improvements in policing services should look and feel like to you as we continue to implement our plan for a new GMP."
For starters, the Greater Manchester Police is split into divisions with the different cities that occupy the county of Greater Manchester. Each division was decided by it's location within the borough and the grouped divisions are known as a "Command Area" with Greater Manchester classed as a "Metropolitan County."
In 2021, GMP arranged most of the divisions together to create what we now know as "command areas," and any divisions that are still isolated on their own are still referred to as a command area. All command areas are ran and operated by an individual Chief Superintendent, whilst each 'division' or 'clusters' are led by a Superintendent.
The 6 command areas as of 2021 are:
South Command Area
Stockport (J) & Trafford (M) Divisions
East Command Area
Tameside (G) & Oldham (Q) Divisions
City Of Manchester Command Area
City of Manchester (A) Division
Salford Command Area
Salford (F) Division
